Bastian Schweinsteiger is having ‘problems’ at Manchester United, Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has suggested.

The former defender was surprised to see a strong return to form from Schweinsteiger ahead of Euro 2016, following a low-key first season in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old was a surprise signing by United last year, having fallen out of favour at Bayern Munich before showing his age in an injury-hit campaign at Old Trafford.

However, Beckenbauer’s quotes in Bild suggest there could be more behind the player’s dip in form since moving to England.

‘Bastian has surprised me,’ he wrote in his column.

‘He was stronger than expected in his 24 minutes against Hungary. He showed great joy of playing and also spiritual motivation. We all know how strong his will can be. We all remember his bloody face in the last minutes of World Cup final. This we will see again.

‘Why? Because he is away from the problems at Manchester. I guess he is feeling really comfortable in the Germany squad.’
