England manager Roy Hodgson and captain Wayne Rooney have issued a message to fans pleading for an end to violence after the Three Lions were threatened with expulsion from Euro 2016 by Uefa.
The tournament in France has been largely overshadowed by fighting in the streets, particularly in Marseille, and later in the Stade Velodrome itself when Russian supporters attacked the England section.
“As the England manager I am now obviously very concerened with the threat which is now hanging over us, and the sanctions that could be imposed on the England team,” Hodgson said.
“We’ve worked very hard to get here and we desperately want to stay in the competition.
“I am appealing to our fans, therefore, and we appreciate the support at the games, of course, but I am appealing to you to stay out of trouble.
“Please make sure that these threats that are issued are not carried out and we will attempt thes best we can to stay in the competition.”
Rooney, who put in a strong performance against Russia before being substituted for Arsenal's Jack Wilshere after 77 minutes, also appealed to the fans.
“I’d like to thank the England fans for their support they gave us against Russia and now we have a big game coming up against Wales," he said.
“I’d like to ask the fans who do not have a ticket not to travel and, to the fans with tickets, be safe, be sensible and continue with your great support.”
