Louis van Gaal was breaking Manchester United records on what seemed a weekly basis during his two years at the club – and most of them were unwanted ones.

The Dutchman presided over two years of boring, turgid football and was sacked as boss less than 48 hours after winning the FA Cup.

At one stage of Van Gaal’s second season, the Red Devils went 12 matches without scoring in the first half at Old Trafford and the club ended the season with a record-low amount of goals scored in the league – a measly 49.

Jose Mourinho has quickly set up reshaping United’s squad and made Villarreal defender Eric Bailly his first signing last month in a £30m deal.

It is United’s attack, though, that requires the most surgery and the 53-year-old is closing in on deals for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to buffer up the Red Devils’ frontline.

With Wayne Rooney likely to drop back into midfield, United’s attack needs additions and in Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan the club will be acquiring two players that scored the same as the rest of the Red Devils squad in the league combined last season.

Goals scored in the league last season

Manchester United: 49
Ibrahimovic: 38
Mkhitaryan: 11
Ibrahimovic & Mkhitaryan: 49

Though there’s still work to be done to get the Mkhitaryan deal over the line, the signings would transform United’s attack and Reds can expect a return to the free-flowing attacking football that they were accustomed to under Sir Alex Ferguson’s swashbuckling sides.
