Wales legend pinpoints Portugal defence as their weakness

Wales legend Ian Rush believes that Chris Coleman’s side are capable of beating Portugal and reaching the Euro 2016 final, as their opponents have an Achilles heel in their side.

Although Fernando Santos’ men boast a formidable attacking unit containing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Renato Sanches, Nani and Ricardo Quaresma, the former Liverpool striker thinks they are weak defensively.

“Portugal's weakness is that the defence find it hard to keep a clean sheet and so they will let in goals,” he told Goal.

For the Welsh, Wednesday’s fixture is the culmination of a long-term plan that is finally coming to fruition, although Rush has warned the absence of Aaron Ramsey will be a heavy one for the squad to carry.

“We are confident because we have a great team spirit, but Ramsey will be missed though for his goals,” he said.

“We put a programme in seven years ago and now we are getting the rewards as it all starts from the grassroots. I am proud to be the Elite Performance Director of the Welsh FA Trust.”
