Arsenal can win the Premier League this season even without being active in the transfer market, according to former Sebastien Squillaci.

Squillaci, 36, is currently plying his trade in Ligue 1 with Bastia after Arsene Wenger called time on his disastrous spell at Arsenal when he made just 23 Premier League appearances after a £4million move.

The current Arsenal squad has been decimated by injuries; Per Mertersacker, Gabriel Paulista and Olivier Giroud all sidelined for their league opener against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The annual moans from Arsenal fans wiling Wenger to sign a big name striker have come and, despite a little excitement around the prospect of Alexandre Lacazette, and seemingly gone again in the blink of an eye.

Despite their lack of activity in the window, Squillaci believes Wenger has enough to end their title drought in what could be the Frenchman’s final season at the club.

‘Last season, they [Arsenal] finished second and they have gained a lot of experience over the years,’ Squillaci told Goal.

‘They reinforce their team each year and even though they didn’t make many transfers this summer, I think Arsenal will be among the title contenders.

‘We saw several movements in the Premier League in terms of coaches and they all have a lot of experience of winning trophies with big clubs.

‘I think it will be a good fight for a league that is already financially on another planet. There will be many quality games and it will be a good season.’
