Turns out the belief that all Manchester United fans come from Surrey is wide of the mark. They actually come from Egypt.

Research into the Twitter followings of all 20 Premier League clubs reveal that Manchester United have more followers in the African nation then they do in the UK.

Of their 8.49million followers, 17.1% are from Egypt, while 16.3% are from the UK. India, Nigeria, USA and Indonesia also provided a significant amount of support for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Manchester United are the only Premier League club for which the UK does not make up the most significant tranche of support.

Research by the Premier League of Nations showed that in contrast the least diverse of the 20 Premier League clubs is Middlesbrough, with 60% of their followers located within the UK.

The UK followings of Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea are 17%, 21.1% and 15.3% respectively, with the figures perhaps giving an insight into teams’ global appeal more than anything else.

Nigeria and India make up a sizeable chunk of the Twitter followings of most Premier League clubs, with those particular nations in the top five of every side except Boro.

Tottenham meanwhile have the widest fan base – with supporters in a staggering 214 countries and territories across the globe.

How was the research conducted?

The Premier League of Nations explain: ‘We used a Twitter API to pull in all the users who follow Premier League clubs’ official handles. From this we pulled in the location details of each follower and ran them through a geocoder to find out where they were based.’
