Jose Mourinho has revealed that he reached an agreement with Anthony Martial to manage the forward’s playing time for Manchester United during the festive schedule.

The France international capped an impressive display against Middlesbrough on New Year’s Eve with a late equaliser before Paul Pogba struck to secure the three points for Mourinho’s side.

But despite his performance at Old Trafford, Martial was left on the bench for the 2-0 victory over West Ham on January 2.

The 21-year-old was recalled to the side and found the net on Saturday as United sealed a comfortable 4-0 win over Reading in the FA Cup third round.

‘He played very well against Middlesbrough but because he was not playing for a long time, he and myself felt that 48 hours later against West Ham it was better for him not to start,’ Mourinho explained.

‘Today, fresh, and again, very objective.

‘Playing against [Chris] Gunter, who is a very good right-back, and he performed very well again.’
