Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has explained why he’s given Luke Shaw his starting place back tonight and the qualities that give him the edge over some of his rivals for the left-back slot.

The England international has endured a frustrating season under Mourinho this term, failing to cement a regular starting spot and receiving his fair share of public criticism from his manager.

United take on Anderlecht in tonight’s Europa League quarter-final clash, and Shaw is back in the starting line up again after some recent improvement, though he did miss the Chelsea game.

Speaking about his decision to go for Shaw and drop Matteo Darmian, Mourinho said it was down to the former Southampton man’s attacking ability.

‘Luke is more an offensive player than Matteo,’ the Portuguese explained.

‘Mateo is phenonmenal in his defensive jobs but Shaw is as natural left footed player.

‘We are going to try to attack in spite of 1-1 result away we don’t’ want to wait for things. Luke is fresh and for sure is going to try.’

In a damning verdict on Shaw earlier this month, Mourinho said: ‘I was thinking for him and leading his performance (against Everton). If he was on the other side it would not be the same and at this level it is not possible.

‘He has to improve and we have to help.’
