Diego Costa could out-shine Harry Kane, says Paul Merson (Pictures: Getty)

Chelsea striker Diego Costa could edge Tottenham counterpart Harry Kane to emerge as the matchwinner in this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final, according to Paul Merson.

The former Arsenal star is backing the Blues front-man to find some joy against Spurs’ defence, despite him having gone off the boil in recent games.

Tottenham also have the meanest defence in the Premier League and go into this game in fine form, though Merson has questioned their recent record.

The ex-Gunner feels Spurs have benefited from playing some weak teams in the league and could get caught out against a side of Chelsea’s calibre.

‘Diego Costa is miles behind Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot but he could be the match-winner for Chelsea at Wembley,’ Merson wrote in the Daily Star.

‘He’s not in great form but I think he’ll get more chances in today’s semi-final than Kane – and I think he’ll get more change out of that Tottenham defence.

‘Spurs are flying and they’re killing teams off but they haven’t played anybody decent in their recent unbeaten run, which has been going since defeat at Liverpool in February.

‘I think they could be in for a fall against Chelsea. Spurs beat the Blues at home in January and gave them the runaround for a while at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season before getting steamrollered.’
