Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Torino striker Andrea Belotti, according to reports.

The Sunday Mirror claims that the Italy international is at the top of Jose Mourinho’s summer shortlist, and United will now step up their pursuit following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s knee ligament injury.

The Swede will consult a knee specialist over his injury amid fears that he could be sidelined for several months.

Belotti, meanwhile, is the joint-top scorer in Serie A with 25 goals so far.

The 23-year-old has a €100 million (£84m) release clause which only applies to teams outside of Italy.

Torino boss Sinisa Mihajlovic admits his star striker will leave ‘sooner or later’ and believes the Italy international will guarantee United 30 goals a season.

‘It would be difficult to replace Belotti,’ he said.

‘I hope he stays but if he does he must have the right mentality. We all hope Belotti stays at the club and he’d like to stay as well.

‘However, big offers will come sooner or later and at that point it could be hard to stay. Belotti is 23 and he could score 30 goals each season. Some big club could come here and offer him five, six, seven million a year for five years.

‘That would make 30 million. Let’s presume he stays: what happens if he picks up an injury? What happens if he loses the right attitude? This is not an easy decision to make.’
