Jose Mourinho has given the green light for Manchester United to begin negotiations with Real Madrid over David De Gea’s transfer, according to reports.

Spanish radio station Onda Cero reports that De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has been told by Mourinho that he is free to hold talks with the Champions League holders this summer.

But the report also claims that De Gea must be prepared to accept a lower salary if he wants to make a return to the Spanish capital at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old is currently earning £200,000-a-week at Old Trafford – a figure which Madrid are not prepared to match.

Madrid have reportedly made the signing of De Gea their top priority of the summer and the Spaniard will be brought in to replace Keylor Navas, although a bid for £60m may be needed to land Mourinho’s No.1.

Last week, reports claimed that United are privately admitting defeat in their efforts to keep De Gea at Old Trafford.

But Mourinho is already making plans to replace his first-choice goalkeeper by pushing ahead with a £40 million move for Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.
