Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso may have only played 16 games in a brief loan spell with Sunderland back in 2013/14, but he clearly hasn’t forgotten his old club.

The Spaniard tweeted his sadness at seeing the Black Cats go down today, following their 1-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth earlier in the afternoon.

Alonso joined Chelsea from Fiorentina in the summer and has proven a surprise hit in the Premier League, having previously failed to make much of an impression in spells with both Sunderland and Bolton.

While the 26-year-old looks on course to win the title with Chelsea this season after spending much of the campaign on top of the table, his former side were confirmed as dropping down into the Championship following their loss today.

Taking to social media to express his sadness, he said: ‘Sad to see Sunderland going down. No doubt they will bounce back to the Premier League soon!’

Sunderland’s defeat today ended ten consecutive seasons in the top flight, though they had flirted with relegation on a number of occasions in recent seasons.

David Moyes’ position as manager of the club is bound to come into question after a torrid run of form that has seen them win none of their last ten league games, a run in which they’ve scored just two goals.
