Tottenham’s title hopes are surely over (Picture: Getty)

Tottenham have been defended by an unlikely source tonight as Arsenal legend Thierry Henry insisted they did not throw away this season’s Premier League title.

Spurs lost 1-0 to West Ham this evening to all but hand the trophy to Chelsea, ending a nine-game winning streak that looked to give them real hope of a first league win since 1961.

Still, with Chelsea top for much of the campaign and only recently conceding some ground to their rivals, Henry feels it is harsh to call Mauricio Pochettino’s men bottlers.

Tottenham also threw away a chance at the title when up against surprise winners Leicester City last season, but Henry felt that these circumstances were different.

‘You have to have led to throw it away,’ the Frenchman told Sky Sports.

‘They gave us a race, they never threw anything away.’

Henry also said that West Ham deserved huge credit for the way they fought to victory against such an in-form team.

‘What happened tonight – West Ham happened,’ he added. ‘You have to give that team a lot of credit, they were brilliant. The whole team was deserved to be man of the match.’
