Gary Neville slammed Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera for his reaction to Arsenal’s opening goal at the Emirates Stadium.

After a goalless first 54 minutes in north London, the Gunners took the lead as Granit Xhaka’s long-range effort deflected off Herrera and looped over David De Gea.

The United goalkeeper had been in fine form up to that point but was helpless to stop the hosts taking control of the Premier League fixture.

Former England defender Neville said Herrera should have stood tall and taken the shot to his face rather than turning his back and ducking.

‘He’s turned his back there,’ Neville said on Sky Sports. ‘He’s had a good season up to now but he should not have done that.

‘He’s got to take it on the chin.’

Arsenal doubled their lead minutes later through Danny Welbeck – the former United man found space in the box and headed home Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s inviting cross.

On the second goal, former Premier League star Mark Schwarzer said: ‘That’s really poor defending in the middle of six-yard box by Manchester United.

‘Danny Welbeck is left completely unmarked because Chris Smalling thinks he is going to win the header further up and he totally misjudges it.’
