Newcastle players celebrate winning the Championship title

Newcastle United clinched the Championship title with victory over Barnsley, after Brighton conceded a late equaliser at Aston Villa.

Ayoze Perez, Chancel Mbemba and Dwight Gayle scored in a comfortable victory, but it was Jack Grealish's 89th-minute goal which sealed the Magpies' title.

Perez's flicked finish made it 1-0, before Mbemba smashed in to double the lead from a Perez rebound.

Gayle added a late third before Grealish's goal handed them the title.

It was a comfortable win for Rafael Benitez's side - yet it looked like it would not be enough to seal top spot, after Glenn Murray's penalty had put league leaders Brighton in front at Villa Park.

However, despite being down to 10 men following Nathan Baker's red card, Grealish beat Brighton keeper David Stockdale to send the Magpies above Brighton in the table.

At St James' Park, DeAndre Yedlin terrorised Barnsley down the right-hand side and it was his cross which Perez guided into the bottom corner to open the scoring.

Christian Atsu forced Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies into two strong diving saves with powerful shots and Massadio Haidara smashed a good chance over the crossbar from Perez's cut-back as the hosts dominated.

Davies kept out Jack Colback with his legs, but the Magpies got a deserved second when Davies pushed Perez's shot out perfectly for Mbemba to smash home his first goal for the club.

Jonjo Shelvey struck the post before Aleksandar Mitrovic's header sent substitute Gayle through to complete the scoring with a confident finish past the onrushing Davies.

Mission accomplished for Newcastle

Under manager Benitez, Newcastle brought 12 players to the club after dropping into the Championship last summer, with Matt Ritchie and Gayle moving down a division to sign five-year deals.

More than £50 million was spent in transfer fees alone, but these were offset by the sales of Andros Townsend, Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum among others.

Nevertheless, the Magpies were still under pressure to achieve promotion - a feat they managed with two games to spare.

Benitez's side have battled with Brighton throughout the season for top spot, but since the Seagulls achieved promotion on 17 April they have dropped off the pace dramatically.

Ultimately it was three straight wins for Newcastle and three matches without three points for Chris Hughton's side that told, giving the Toon the perfect end to the campaign.

Average attendance as SJP this season over 51,000, not bad eh for a team which have won nowt for nigh on 50 years. Geordies just love their football and a team who give everything, well done Newcastle United on a swift retun to the big time.

Well done Newcastle from an envious Wolves Fan!, You are clearly too big for the Championship in my humble opinion!, You have a top Manager & it looks bright for You next season with a bit of cash to spend!, i think that You might be a dark horse to maybe sneak into Europe or win a Cup!.

Great effort from Newcastle well done to the Toon Army and Rafa. I've never been an admirer of Ashley but for the club's sake he needs to step up and give Benitez the funds and all the backing to help him keep them up.

This is from a Man City fan look forward to seeing you back in the prem.

Brighton supporter here. Well done Newcastle. Thoroughly deserved. As for us down South if we don`t match the £70m promised to Rafa in the summer we are going to be in real trouble next season. It is perfectly clear that most of our players are not Premiership quality. To put up such a poor show today against 10 men tells a story. I just think take out Glen Murray`s 23 goals and we`ve nothing.

As a Villa fan who lived on Tyneside for 7 years delighted Grealish grabbed that late equaliser. The Toon army should be in the top flight. Next year the nearest geographical premier league to them could be the Manchester clubs!

Hopefully we'll be playing you again the season after next in the premier league.

given the choice of watching hull, burnley, stoke or watford, as a neutral in the premiership, i'd rather watch the geordies and the ATMOSPHERE they bring.

Congrats to the Magpies, looking forward to avenge that 5-1 last season it still hurts.

You have great fans & are living proof that a club can be loved, yet have failed to win a trophy for decades, & get 50 000 + home gates ...incredible !!

I hope this changes for you, as in our current game we have ££ for cups, and scorn for passion.

Our game needs genuine fans from a true club.

Well done NUFC. Commisurations to Brighton.

Greatest respect to Rafa, who had faith in his own ability and support from the fans. Not sure any other Champions League winning manager would have had the guts to stick with a sinking ship and turn things around in 1 year.

At the end of the day we have won the title and I am chuffed to bits, yes I do feel for Brighton and Chris Hughton, because at times yes, they probably did deserve the title,but at the same time we did the double over them, 46 have been played, and it states we have won more, and have more points so that just says it all on who won and deserved the title.IN RAFA WE TRUST.......

As a long time NUFC fan I remember what Chris Hughton did for us so I would have been happy to see him and Brighton go up as champions.

The squad we have is not good enough to do well in the EPL. First XI is good enough but then standards drops quickly. Rafa will need 8-10 new faces by August
