Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he hopes the world transfer record is broken this summer so it can relieve the pressure on £89million signing Paul Pogba.

The France international became the most expensive player in history when he moved from Juventus back to United, the club he’d left on a free just four years previously.

While Pogba had become regarded as one of the world’s top midfielders during his time in Serie A, he has so far struggled to replicate that form in the Premier League.

Mourinho is happy with him, however, and insists views on the 24-year-old’s performances would be different if he hadn’t cost so much money.

‘I think the problem is the tag, the price tag on his (Pogba’s) back,’ Mourinho told Omnisport.

‘I hope next summer he’s not anymore the highest transfer fee and then the pressure goes to somebody else.

Most expensive transfers of all time

Paul Pogba - Juventus to Manchester United - £89million

Gareth Bale - Tottenham to Real Madrid - £85million

Cristiano Ronaldo - Manchester United to Real Madrid - £80million

Gonzalo Higuain - Napoli to Juventus - £75million

Romelu Lukaku - Everton to Manchester United - £75million

Luis Suarez - Liverpool to Barcelona - £65million

James Rodriguez - Monaco to Real Madrid - £63million

Oscar - Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG - £60million

Angel Di Maria - Real Madrid to Manchester United - £59million

‘If his transfer fee was half of it, everybody would say “what a buy, he’s playing more than good”.

‘But everybody expects performances according to that huge transfer fee and that brings pressure and that brings sometimes unfair analysis.’
