Jose Mourinho’s hopes of earning a lucrative contract extension at Manchester United hinges on the outcome of Wednesday’s Europa League final, according to the Sunday Mirror.

United had planned to enter into talks with Lous van Gaal’s successor this summer, but with entry to next season’s Champions League now dependent on victory over Ajax in Stockholm, the club’s hierarchy are now said to be adopting a wait and see approach.

Despite assembling the most expensive squad in history and breaking the world record by signing Paul Pogba  for £89.3 million last summer, Mourinho’s side have failed to mount a credible title challenge and are destined to finish sixth in the Premier League.

Mourinho, himself, penned a £15 million-a-year deal last summer when he agreed to succeed Van Gaal.

But with United set to lose more than £50 million in revenues if they fail to qualify for the Champions League and their £75 million-a-year kit manufacturing deal with adidas set to be slashed by 30%, the board are unwilling to enter into potential negotiations until the club’s European fate is known.
