David Beckham paid tribute to the city of Manchester after his former club United won the Europa League.

On an emotional night in Stockholm following the attack at Manchester Arena which killed 22 people, Jose Mourinho’s side beat Ajax 2-0 to lift the title.

Paul Pogba put the Red Devils in front after 19 minutes with a deflected strike, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan secured the victory with a goal shortly after half-time.

A minute’s silence was held before the game and the United players wore black armbands as a mark of respect to those affected by the bombing on Monday evening.

He wrote: ‘Tonight was more important than sport… Yes a big night for Manchester United but an even bigger night for the city and for our country.

‘At a time when we are grieving for the families that have lost loved ones we have a sport that has bought a little happiness at a difficult time… We pray for peace.’

The victory gave United their second major trophy of the year, having won the EFL Cup at Wembley earlier in the campaign.

Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera put in an influential display, taking home the Man of the Match award, and dedicated the trophy to the victims of the attack.

‘We are very happy but I want to dedicate this trophy to the victims, this is just football but what happened two days ago was horrible,’ he said.

‘We want peace in the world, we want a normal world.

‘I know we are no-one, we are just football players, but we have some audience so from here I want to say work together for a normal world.

‘This happened in Manchester but everyone has to be a united to fight for peace and respect in the world.’
