Manchester United have been given hope of signing Eric Dier, believing they can offer him two things Tottenham can’t.

The England international has been linked with a £50million switch to Old Trafford this summer.

Having impressed at White Hart Lane since joining in 2014 the 23-year-old has become a target for other clubs.

Tottenham are determined to retain the central midfielder, with some reports suggesting they won’t even put a price tag on Dier.

However Manchester United believe they can lure him away.

They can offer the 18-times capped player substantially better wages, which could prove tempting.

In addition, Jose Mourinho would guarantee to Dier he would play in his favoured central midfield position. Last season he was deployed more often as a central defender by Mauricio Pochettino.

Sir Alex Ferguson on the difficulty signing players from Tottenham

‘I must say negotiations were very difficult and went on for ages [when trying to sign Michael Carrick]. I always remember I thought it was done and David Gill phoned me on the golf course to say they want more. Typical Daniel Levy!

‘It was very hard to negotiate but, at the end of the day, we got it through and, ever since he joined us, he’s had a fantastic career.’

Dier is understood to be Manchester United’s priority target as Mourinho seeks a long-term replacement for midfielder Michael Carrick. An alternative choice is Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, who has also been linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams.
