Manchester United have been encouraged to make a move for Renato Sanches after Bayern Munich lowered the midfielder’s asking price, according to reports in Germany.

The 19-year-old, who was signed by the German champions from Benfica for €35 million (£27.5m) last year, has failed to make an impact in his first season in Germany, starting just nine games in all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Last month, Bild claimed that Bayern would be willing to sell Sanches if they fully recouped the €35m they initially paid to Benfica.

But on Thursday, Kicker reported that the Portugal international’s asking price has now been slightly lowered with Bayern now open to accepting a bid of €30m (£26m).

Sanches is currently on international duty with Portugal at the Under-21 European Championship after being overlooked for the senior squad’s Confederations Cup campaign in Russia.

United missed out on signing Sanches last year but Jose Mourinho admitted that he would have urged Ed Woodward to sign the midfielder if he replaced Louis van Gaal earlier.

‘I arrived late, I signed in May, we started talking a week before, but completely out of the process. If I had arrived earlier, I’d fight for him,’ Mourinho told SportTV.

‘Manchester United watched Renato many times and maybe I did it even more. In so much time at home, I watched many Benfica and Portuguese league games, I got to know the boy better with time.’

Mourinho remains in the market for a new central midfielder this summer, although the names on the United manager’s shortlist are more defensively-minded.

A bid for Nemanja Matic could be submitted once Chelsea sign Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, while Eric Dier has also been targeted but Tottenham can command a high asking price for the England international.

On Thursday, reports in Italy claimed that United have reached an initial agreement with Monaco over a €40m (£35.2m) deal for Fabinho.
