Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has reportedly rejected a contract worth over £8million a year at the club as he looks to force a transfer to Barcelona.

Chelsea have also been linked with an interest in the £88million-rated Italy international this summer, but recent reports claimed he’d agreed personal terms on a move to Barca.

Verratti has long been regarded as one of the best midfield playmakers in Europe, and PSG are determined not to lose him this summer despite his own desire to move on.

The 24-year-old is a key part of this PSG team, but has given them a headache by snubbing a new deal that remains on the table for him during a meeting between himself, his agent and the club, according to Sport Mediaset.

PSG’s former sporting director Patrick Kluivert admitted yesterday that Verratti wants to go, but that he expects the Ligue 1 giants to demand huge money for him if he does end up leaving.

‘Verratti renewed last year for four years and I know that Verratti wants to come to Barca but PSG will not let him,’ he said.

‘It’s going to be very difficult (for Barcelona to sign him). If a player is not happy in the end the one that decides are PSG.

‘Verratti’s worth more than €80m. I think he’s worth more than €100m.’
