Chelsea are ready to swoop for Roma star Kostas Manolas after the defender was a no-show for his medical with Zenit Saint Petersburg, according to reports in Italy.

The centre-back was due to arrive in Russia for his medical this week, but refused to formalise the final details of the deal.

Roma have agreed a £30million transfer with Zenit for the defender, but Manolas has insisted his wages should be paid in Euros rather than Rubles.

Zenit want his salary to be paid in Rubles, but Manolas is concerned about the volatility of the Russian currency.

Chelsea have been watching developments unfold and are now ready to enter the race, according to Premium Sport.

Manolas has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the past with reports earlier this summer claiming the Blues were preparing a bid.

The Greek international has also been linked with Chelsea’s bitter London rivals, Arsenal, with the Gunners rumoured to have moved for him before he signed for Roma in 2014.

Manolas arrived in Italy from Olympiacos, but is now surplus to requirements at the Serie A club.

Chelsea should be able to match Zenit’s offer and would have the added bonus of the lure of Premier League football to offer Manolas.

The 26-year-old made 45 appearances last season for Roma, missing just five Serie A games for the entire campaign.

Manolas is considered a fine defender, but Roma feel like they cash in this summer and invest the money elsewhere in the squad.

Antonio Conte has been tipped to raid Serie A several times in the next few weeks as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Chelsea are reportedly close to finalising a deal for Juventus defender Alex Sandro.
