Long-term Manchester United target Saul Niguez has admitted that he wants higher wages at Atletico Madrid after starring for Spain in the semi-final of the European Under-21 Championship.

The 22-year-old midfielder has scored 22 goals in 136 appearances for Atleti since breaking into the first-team back in 2012 but has consistently been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent seasons.

Saul is not desperate to leave Atletico this summer but it’s clear he wishes for more money in the Spanish capital amid speculation of a big-money Premier League switch.

‘I am happy at Atletico and I feel valued but everyone would like to earn a bit more money to be able to help out the family,’ Saul said following his semi-final hat-trick for Spain’s U21 side against Italy.

‘I’m fine at Atletico. I don’t want to leave. It was hard to get the confidence of Cholo [Diego Simeone] and now that I have it it would be very difficult to start from zero at another team.

‘I don’t see myself outside Atletico, something very surprising would have to happen.’

Saul has a £71million buy-out clause in his contract at Atletico so a potential move would not come cheap for the likes of United.
