Everton boss Ronald Koeman has wished Romelu Lukaku well after Manchester United agreed a fee for the striker.

Lukaku scored 26 goals in 39 appearances for the Toffees last term but the 24-year-old is set to seal a £75million move to Old Trafford after completing a medical in Los Angeles.

Chelsea were also expressing a strong interest in Lukaku, and appeared on the cusp of landing the Belgian, but Koeman has admitted he’s made the ‘right decision’ in joining the Red Devils ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

‘We know it was one of the challenges for Lukaku,’ Koeman said during Wayne Rooney’s press conference on Monday.

‘He took the right decision and lets hope everything goes well for him because I like him. I like the player but now it’s about Everton.’

Koeman believes Everton can be a force this season despite Lukaku’s imminent departure from Goodison Park.

He added: ‘The club is showing that ambition that everybody likes to have.

‘It’s an exciting time for Everton. Its down to everyone to show that we’re really strong.

‘It’s important to get the fitness and the team right and we will play soon for qualification for the Europa League.’
