Arsene Wenger was pleased to see Alexandre Lacazette lift a big weight off his shoulders by scoring on his Arsenal debut in today’s 2-0 friendly win over Sydney FC.

The 26-year-old joined the Gunners last week in a club-record £52million deal, and had a prolific scoring record during his time with Ligue 1 giants Lyon.

However, many big names have failed to continue to produce the goods after moving from one league to another, and Wenger seemed relieved to see his most expensive purchase ever get off the mark quickly.

While it was only a friendly, Lacazette showed his composure and touch in front of goal with a well-taken second to delight his new manager.

‘It is important for him to get that (first goal) off his shoulders,’ Wenger said after the game.

‘You expect to score if you are a striker.

‘You could see that he was happy but overall what we were looking for was to play at pace and to develop our collective game.’

Lacazette scored 39 goals in all competitions last season and had also been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Atletico Madrid earlier in the summer.
