Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly considering late summer transfer window moves for Everton midfielder and Tottenham target Ross Barkley.

The England international is valued at around £50million by his club as a host of sides show an interest in him this summer, with Arsenal also linked as admirers.

However, Chelsea and United are expected to step up their interest in Barkley, who is stalling on signing a new contract with just a year to run on his current deal.

Once regarded as one of the top young players in the Premier League, Barkley hasn’t quite lived up to expectations at Goodison Park so far, though he is seen as someone who could serve as a decent squad player for Chelsea and United.

The 23-year-old scored five goals and laid on eight assists to his team-mates last season, but may be about to be replaced by manager Ronald Koeman.

Davy Klaassen has already been brought in, while Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson remains a target for the Toffees.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton have not yet received a concrete offer for Barkley, but Chelsea and United could be ready to try their luck in the coming weeks.

This could be a blow for long-time admirers Tottenham, who had looked to be leading the chase for Barkley’s signature, only to be put off by his rumoured wage demands.

Sources close to the player, however, have denied that he was asking for as much as £150,000 per week from Spurs, which would have made him their highest-paid player.
