Arsenal have reportedly rejected a £16million bid from Crystal Palace for the transfer of unsettled defender Calum Chambers.

The Gunners are said to be holding out for as much as £20m for the former Southampton man, who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough after falling down the pecking order.

Arsenal signed Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding to add to their defensive options last summer, and don’t seem to have a place for Chambers ahead of the new season.

Palace are the club leading the chase for the England international’s signature at the moment, but will have to improve on an opening offer of £16m.

Arsenal want at least £4m more than that for Chambers, having initially preferred to only loan him out this summer, according to the Daily Telegraph.

However, the north Londoners now seem more open to discussing a permanent deal for the 22-year-old, as they look to offload a number of their backup players in a summer clear-out.

Wojciech Szczesny joined Juventus yesterday and other big names such as Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs could be set to follow out of the Emirates Stadium exit door in the coming weeks.

Arsenal have already brought in Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac this summer, while Thomas Lemar could follow if they can raise around £80m in funds by making some sales.
