Diego Costa’s inevitable exit from Chelsea looks to be nearing after AC Milan confirmed they have held talks with the striker’s agent.

The Spain international has appeared destined to leave Stamford Bridge since he revealed Antonio Conte informed him he wasn’t in the Chelsea manager’s plans for the new season.

The club most strongly linked with Costa has been his former club Atletico Madrid.

But while Costa has spoken of his interest in returning to the Spanish capital, and even filmed himself wearing their shirt recently, the deal is complicated by a transfer ban which prohibits the La Liga side from signing players until January.

What Costa said about Conte’s text message

‘I’m going to be honest, the other day, Conte sent me a message saying I am not in his plans for Chelsea, so I’ll have to find a way out.

‘I love living in Madrid, but I have to think about my future. It’s complicated because I cannot go four or five months without playing. I have no preference for a league, I just want to play.’

AC Milan CEO Marco Fassone revealed the big-spending club have held talks with Costa’s agent Jorge Mendes.

‘I would prefer to avoid talking about players from other teams; Diego Costa is a great player, but a Chelsea player,’ Fassone told Sky Sports.

‘We went to see [Costa’s agent] Jorge Mendes; there is a lot you can talk to him about. Costa is a great player but he is of Chelsea. That’s all.’

Chelsea are ready to let Costa leave after securing the signature of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid for £60million.
