Chelsea’s new signing Alvaro Morata hasn’t made the best of starts in pre-season and his manager Antonio Conte has admitted the striker needs to improve.

The Spain international recently joined the Blues in a club-record £60million transfer from Real Madrid, but has looked a little off the pace in his first two appearances for the club.

While Morata managed an assist in a 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich earlier in the week, he failed to make any impact as Conte’s side were beaten again today by Inter Milan.

Chelsea fans were quick to point the finger at Conte afterwards, with Morata used out of position on the left-hand side of Chelsea’s attack, allowing Michy Batshuayi to occupy the central striker role.

Still, speaking afterwards, the Italian tactician called on the 24-year-old to improve both his physical condition and to adapt better to Chelsea’s system.

‘Morata is having training with us and for sure he has to improve a lot his physical condition to go quickly to the idea of our football,’ said Conte.

‘But he is working very well and today he tried to do his best but for sure he has to improve.’

Morata will not have a lot more time to settle as Chelsea have just one more game before the start of the Premier League season.

Chelsea's pre-season fixtures

Chelsea 3-0 Arsenal
Chelsea 2-3 Bayern Munich
Chelsea 1-2 Inter Milan
Aug 6 – Arsenal (Wembley – Community Shield)

The Premier League champions face FA Cup winners Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley next Sunday, but don’t go into that game in particularly convincing form.

With last season’s top scorer Diego Costa almost certain to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge before the end of the summer, the pressure will be on for Morata to show Conte he can be his main man up front in the season ahead.

For now, however, Batshuayi’s form in pre-season has seen him make a strong case that he should be first-choice this term, having only played a supporting role in his first year at the club.
