Chelsea boss Antonio Conte admitted he was ‘angry’ and ‘frustrated’ with referee Bob Madley for his performance in the Blues’ defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield.

The Italian’s side took the lead through Victor Moses but the game swung Arsenal’s way ten minutes from time when Pedro was sent off for a challenge on Mohamed Elneny and Sead Kolasinac scored with a header from the resulting free-kick.

The Gunners beat Chelsea 4-1 in a penalty shootout but Conte was still angry that Willian had been booked in the first half for diving when replays showed he had been clipped by Hector Bellerin.

Victor Moses was sent off in May’s FA Cup final defeat against the Gunners and Conte says it’s the second time that there’s been a ‘controversial’ decision against his side when they’ve played Arsenal.

‘For sure there is disappointment for us to finish for the second time with ten men against Arsenal,’ said Conte after the defeat.

‘First in the FA Cup final, now in the Community Shield. Honestly, I didn’t see images [replays] of the tackle or the yellow card for Willian [but] a lot of people have told me that it was a penalty.

‘For sure there is a bit of frustration but we have to respect the referee’s decision. Sometimes the decision make you a bit angry.

Conte was seen speaking with the referee following Pedro’s red card but he said it was pointless arguing his case/

‘He tried to explain to me why he had made this decision but there wasn’t time.’ said Conte.

‘I wanted to ask him why there wasn’t a penalty and the yellow card for Willian but we would be speaking until 9 o’clock.

‘We must accept his decisions but for the second time there’s a controversial decision against us.’
