Arsenal could be taking a risk keeping Alexis Sanchez until the end of his contract as he might not give it his all at the risk of an injury wrecking his transfer chances, according to Danny Murphy.

The Chilean forward is set to become a free agent at the end of the season after failing to agree a new deal at the Emirates Stadium, but the club look to be refusing to sell.

Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and other top clubs have shown an interest in Sanchez this summer, but Arsene Wenger has said time and time again that he would rather keep him until the end of his contract.

Still, as well as losing him on a free, Murphy believes Arsenal might not get the best out of Sanchez as he’ll look to keep himself in top condition for his next club once he’s free to negotiate a move away.

‘Alexis Sanchez is turning into a lose-lose situation for Arsenal. Keep him and he will go for free at the end of the season. Sell him and he is impossible to replace,’ the former Liverpool man wrote in the London Evening Standard.

‘If he stays, he will still be Arsenal’s best player — and one of the best in the league.

‘But he knows he will be out of contract at the end of the season and for a footballer, that is a precarious place to be.

‘Sanchez’s work ethic is outstanding, as I have said many times. Yet when you are in your final year, you know you are in a world of trouble if you get a bad injury.’

Sanchez was one of the best attacking players in Europe last season, scoring 30 goals and contributing 13 assists to Arsenal’s cause.

The Gunners have looked like trying to replace him by targeting the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Thomas Lemar this summer, but neither deal has come to fruition.
