Gary Neville is rarely lost for words but the Manchester United legend-turned-TV pundit could hardly believe what he was seeing from Granit Xhaka during Arsenal’s clash against Liverpool.

The Gunners made a poor start at Anfield and found themselves 1-0 down after Roberto Firmino headed home from inside the Arsenal box.

Things got worse for Arsene Wenger’s side 25 minutes later – in-form attacker Sadio Mane was given far too much room down the left and cut inside before slotting a curling effort past Petr Cech.

But before Liverpool’s second goal of the afternoon, Switzerland international Xhaka stunned Neville with a bizarre piece of defending.

Just two yards from Arsenal’s goal and under pressure from a Liverpool player, the £30million signing attempted to back-heel the ball to his goalkeeper rather than clear his lines.

The 24-year-old, who was later booked for one of numerous fouls, did not succeed however and his effort trickled out for a Liverpool corner.

Speaking on Sky Sports, commentator Neville said: ‘I think I’ve just seen him try to back-heel it to his keeper inside his own six yard box.

‘Try and find words for that. I can’t believe what I’m seeing.’

Arsenal fans were equally frustrated by the midfielder:
