Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger opted against berating his players in the dressing room following the 4-0 thrashing against Liverpool, according to reports.

The Frenchman witnessed his side capitulate at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge inflicting the damage. It could have been worse.

Wenger, who could be seen anxiously wringing his hands during the match, might have been expected to unleash his anger and frustration on his players after overseeing such an abject display.

However the Daily Mail report he kept his cool in the dressing room after the match.

It’s alleged the dressing room in general was quiet, although goalkeeper Petr Cech voiced his views to his team-mates.

When Wenger spoke to reporters after the match he said he was shocked by the performance but he would take time to analyse what went wrong.

‘Of course it was shocking. I believe our performance on the day was disastrous,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘We have to take a little distance [before assessing what went wrong]. There are some reasons behind it that we have to analyse. Now players go on international break and we have to take stock.

‘If you find a manager who is happy after a performance like that then good luck.’

Petr Cech was more forthcoming, laying the blame on the players for what happened against Liverpool.

‘I think it was quite simply unacceptable for the size of the club we are and for the team we have,’ Cech told Sky Sports after the game.

‘We were not fighting, we were not running enough, we were not winning any individual battles and as a team we completely failed to respond to their way of playing and this is the most disappointing. We have only ourselves to blame.’

Meanwhile Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil, two of the most criticised players, publicly apologised to the fans after the game.

‘Gunners, I’m sorry – especially for the fans who travelled all the way up to Liverpool to see us fighting,’ said Ozil. ‘But we will try everything to improve in the next game and bounce back from the disappointment we are all feeling at the moment.’
