Liverpool demanded €200 million (£183m) for Philippe Coutinho on La Liga’s deadline day, according to Barcelona’s sporting director Albert Soler.

The Spanish club had made the Brazilian one of their priority targets but Liverpool had remained adamant that the midfielder would not be leaving Anfield this summer.

Liverpool rejected multiple offers for Coutinho, including a £136m offer, but it’s now been revealed that the club would’ve parted with the 25-year-old for a hefty fee.

‘Liverpool put forward to us a price of €200 million and that’s why we decided to finish,’ Soler said at the press conference on Saturday.

‘Neither this club nor this president will put the heritage of the club at risk, when you go to the market with lots of money, the requests that were made to us were exorbitant.’

Coutinho is currently on international duty with Brazil having missed the start of Liverpool’s season due to a back injury.

The midfielder is due to return to Merseyside after Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Colombia on Tuesday evening and could feature in Liverpool’s trip to Manchester City next Saturday.
