'Daddy's Home 2' 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review: More Daddies, More of the Same

February 20, 2018Ben MK

FEATURE:
The original Daddy's Home 2 was far from high art. But when it comes to bromance comedy pairings, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are tough to beat. In short, Daddy's Home 2 was inevitable.

Once again directed by Sean Anders, the sequel finds Brad (Ferrell) and Dusty (Wahlberg) doing what they do best: "co-dadding" like nobody's business. But even though they think their tag team parenting skills are unmatched, if you ask young Megan (Scarlett Estevez) or her older brother, Dylan (Owen Vaccaro), the story might be a little bit different. As a result, Brad and Dusty decide to throw a "Together Christmas" to unify their two families. Little do they realize, however, that their happy family gathering is about to get crashed.

Enter Dusty's estranged, former astronaut dad, Kurt (Mel Gibson), who has decided to make a reappearance in his son's life after a 5-year absence. But when he discovers that his grandkids prefer Brad's goody two-shoes dad, Don (John Lithgow), over him, he decides to one-up Brad and Dusty's Together Christmas — by booking a ski resort getaway for all nine of them, including Brad's wife, Sara (Linda Cardellini), Dusty's girlfriend, Karen (Alessandra Ambrosio), and Karen's daughter, Adrianna (Didi Costine).

Suffice to say, if you thought Daddy's Home 2 was going to diverge from the comedic shenanigans and familial life lessons that its predecessor traded in, you have another thing coming. Yes, Daddy's Home 2 is definitely more of the same, but if you're a fan of the first one, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

AUDIO & VISUALS:
Daddy's Home 2 delivers a solid 4K viewing experience, thanks to a crystal-clear 2160p transfer and HDR hues that are all the more vibrant thanks to the movie's Christmassy color palette. Throw in a Dolby Atmos sound mix — which easily handles the dialogue-driven sound design, along with the occasional sounds of Christmas choirs, bowling alleys and improv bars — and there's not much to complain about as far as audiovisuals are concerned.
