Nothing is more iconic in pirate lore than the Kraken, so its inclusion in Sea of Thieves is not surprising. When the creature was first leaked, gamers were shown the blackened sea and powerful tentacles and believed there was something scary under the water. However, it has recently been discovered that there is, in fact, nothing under the water.

While the inclusion of the Kraken isn’t surprising, its lack of a body is. Although the water turns pitch black, it’s possible to glitch the camera to be rid of the underwater effect, and by doing so, players can see the base of the tentacles without a connecting body. Those who have been excited for the release of Sea of Thieves may be severely disappointed to learn the Kraken is just random tentacles and not truly the terrifying beast of lore. The lack of a body makes the entire encounter much less intimidating than before. The sea turns black, the ship cannot move, and the tentacles arise, but that's it. While the replayability factor of this encounter is supposed to be high due to the tactics of the tentacles, it looks like the tentacles can also just rise up and attack slowly. It may demonstrate more powerful attacks at some point, but not in this video:

Although Sea of Thieves announced it was taking the game one day at a time with no major plans for a long-term roadmap, giving the Kraken a body may need to be at the top of its list. Even though the game currently has to be glitched to see that the Kraken doesn’t have a body, the immersion factor is practically dropped once discovered.

Hopefully, Rare will fix this at some point in the future, perhaps giving the body some in-game animation since it can’t actually be seen underwater. Considering the company previously considered vampires and dinosaurs for its cooperative multiplayer game, the Kraken truly deserves as much attention as any in-game creature  – a vampiric monster or T-rex for example  – due to its place in pirate lore.

Sea of Thieves is available now on Windows PC and Xbox One.
