Pokémon returns to US movie theaters this Thanksgiving

Pokémon’s latest movie will screen in U.S. theaters this November, The Pokémon Company announced. Dubbed Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us in English, the feature-length anime is set in an original timeline with new characters, as well as a totally unique art style.

The Power of Us will run for just four days, right around Thanksgiving break. Select theaters will show the movie on Nov. 24, Nov. 26 and Nov. 28, and Dec. 1. Tickets will be on sale through Fathom Events, which also distributed the previous theatrical Pokémon anime, Pokémon: I Choose You!, last year.

Ash and Pikachu end up in a tiny town by the sea, where the townspeople worship the legendary Pokémon Lugia. (No word on if this town is set in Johto, Lugia’s home region; the poster sure suggests that’s the case, with all those good Johto Pokémon on it.) Something bad happens, as per usual; Ash and Pikachu are the only ones who can save the town, as per usual. Joining our favorite interlopers is a crew of locals that The Pokémon Company describes as including “a compulsive liar” and “a bitter old woman.” Ash sure knows how to pick his new friends.

Not only are there unique characters and an exclusive setting in this movie, but a popular studio was called in to animate it: Wit Studios of Attack on Titan fame. Thankfully, this Pokémon movie doesn’t share much else in common with the slightly grotesque action series.

Meanwhile, Japan just got the film earlier this month; it’s called Everyone’s Story over there, which is a lot more vague than the English title. But maybe this is, indeed, everyone’s story, and not just Ash and Pikachu’s — we’ll find out in November. A trailer’s up top.
