Man Utd say Javier Hernandez could be 'major influence'

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan believes new signing striker Javier Hernandez could become "a major influence" at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old Mexico international was signed before the World Cup for about £7m and subsequently impressed in South Africa, scoring two goals.

"We were pleased with what we saw at the World Cup," Phelan told manutd.com.

"We would like to get him on board as quickly as we can. Then hopefully he will be a major influence on the team."

Hernandez has been on holiday since Mexico were knocked out by Argentina but he will be joining up with his new team-mates in the United States, with United playing his former club Chivas de Guadalajara on 30 July.

That game, which is potentially a massive money-spinner for the Mexican club, was part of the deal to sign Hernandez.

Phelan said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the other coaches were impressed by Hernandez in South Africa and are looking forward to bedding him into the squad.

"We did the deal before the World Cup and that has probably helped us a little bit. He has only just begun his career with the national team but already he is a very influential player for Mexico," added Phelan.

Hernandez, whose father Javier played for Mexico in the 1986 World Cup, has scored 29 goals in 79 games for Chivas, one of Mexico's biggest clubs.

And Phelan added: "He is young, athletic and as keen as mustard. He will be a good addition.

"We all hope he hits the ground running and adds to what we think is a good blend of youth and experience in our squad. We just hope it all comes together."

While Cristiano Ronaldo was not mentioned, it is clear that United are hoping they have unearthed another gem who could emulate the Portuguese star.

United will arrive in Chicago on Monday and will be joined by another new recruit, former Fulham defender Chris Smalling.

Phelan stated: "We had spoken to Chris a few times before he actually joined us. We kept in close contact with him. He is with us now and looking forward to the challenge.

"A club this big is brand new for him. But given time and with a bit of patience, I am sure he will do well. The tour will help him settle in and get to know everyone."

Smalling, who was playing for non-league Maidstone until 2008, was signed for around £7m after impressing for Fulham in the early part of the season but his form has since deteriorated and he was dropped to the bench by the Premier League outfit towards the end of the season.
