England football chiefs have failed to get the controversial Capello Index shut down, after coach Fabio Capello ordered the website to delete all the World Cup rankings appearing under his name.

The marks awarded to England players were still available for the world to see on Sunday night.

"We were led to understand the website would be taken down on Monday morning and that Fabio's name and picture would not be linked in any way with this Index," The Sun quoted an angry FA source, as saying.

"When that did not happen, we were told it was due to a technical issue. But this is not the case as amendments have since been made to the site. The site has nothing to do with the FA and we are not in a position to get it taken off the web," the source said.

The marks awarded to England under the Capello Index are still on the site, although it was off-line for an hour yesterday.

A senior England player said: "If he had distanced himself from the Index, why did marks appear after the World Cup? Now the players want to know when they'll get the chance to mark him."

"There was an easy way to avoid all this - don't mark the players in the first place," he added.
