With Mesut Ozil signing on the dotted line for Real Madrid following the likes of Sami Khedira, Angel Di Maria, Canales, and Pedro Leon all midfield players, it seems the possibility of first team football for Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart is all but limited.

Newly appointed coach Jose Mourinho has not just brought about change in the technical department but has also brought some new faces to the already talented line-up.

With the place of Ronaldo and Alonso cemented, it seems the return of Kaka would be the third regular. Ozil and Khedira could fight for the fourth if Ronaldo's is used as a midfielder rather than a striker.

If not, it still leaves a host of highly skilled players fighting for just two positions.

A quick recap of the mid-fielding services available:

  • Fernando Gago
  • Mahamadou Diarra
  • Lass Diarra
  • Royston Drenthe
  • Sergio Canales
  • Pedro Leon
  • Angel Di Maria
  • Sami Khedira
  • Mesut Ozil
  • Rafael van der Vaart
  • Kaka
  • Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Xabi Alonso
  • Esteban Granero

Yes, while it's clear that players like Ronaldo or Granero is often used more forward, their roles fall into the same category.

Van der Vaart was quoted saying: "I could never play for another club in Spain and the truth is that if you are leaving Real Madrid there is only one club you can join that is not a step down—and that's Manchester United."

"They are a huge club and if the reported interest they have in me turns out to be true, then I would really have to sit down and listen.

"If Manchester United could offer me first-team football with the situation as it is at Madrid, it would be very hard to turn down. Alex Ferguson is a great coach and I would never think about joining a team where I didn't believe I could win things, so all of a sudden that limits your choices.

"At Manchester United you know success is likely and that's a big factor for me at this stage of my career.

"If Jose Mourinho makes it clear I won't play much, I see my future in English football."

Not long ago, Madrid bid farewell to another too very attractive Dutch-man in Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder.A definite decision that the bosses in Spain must have regretted since the pair were both part of the Champions League final hosted in Madrid.

With many speculating at Ferguson has closed the cheque book for the current transfer window after the shock signing of unknown Portuguese forward Bebe.

But with rumors linking United to Ozil who has since be snatched by Madrid, the chance to capture a quality midfielder could just be on the cards.

Will Ferguson take the deal, that's the question?
