Premier League Power Rankings: Week 2

What an interesting week in the Barclays Premier League this weekend it was.

Not one, not two, but three 6-0 games, the most shocking 6-0 win was Newcastle's thrashing of Aston Villa at St, James' Park where Andy Carroll scored one of two hat tricks this weekend, the other scored by Arsenal's Theo Walcott.

Also, Manchester United's curse at Craven Cottage continued when Brede Hangeland first handed a own goal to the Red Devils, and then scored the winner for Fulham.

Here are this week's rankings:

20. Wigan Athletic (19)

The tragic beginning to the season continued for the Latics with a 6-0 home defeat to Chelsea.

Roberto Martinez needs to get his team's results turned around, or he could be the first manager to get canned this season.

19. Blackpool (14)

The Tangerines got a reality check on what life really is in the Premier League when they were blown out by Arsenal 6-0 at the Emirates.

The major turning point in the game was when Ian Evatt was sent off in the 32nd minute for a tackle right outside of the penalty area.

18. West Ham United (16)

At least the Hammers scored a goal this week, and are not the worst team in the league.

Other than that, Avram Grant's team needs a lot of improvement, and Carlton Cole needs to work on his penalty taking skills after his horrid shot that went right into Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen's arms.

17. West Bromwich Albion (20)

The debut of Peter Odemwingie was a good one for Roberto di Matteo's club.

Odemwingie scored in the second half and barely missed a second goal in the win over Sunderland on Saturday.

16. Stoke City (17)

The Potters were the victims of a controversial call at the goal line late in the game against Tottenham. The goal should have been allowed but it was not, and Tony Pulis' club was denied a point.

15. Wolverhampton (15)

Wolves had a solid game and scored off of a brilliant display of tackling by Adlene Guediora that led to Sylvain Ebanks-Blake beating Tim Howard to earn Wolves a point at Goodison Park on Saturday.

14. Blackburn Rovers (13)

Blackburn suffered a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham over the weekend in a game where Morten Gamst Pedersen had his second half penalty saved by Ben Foster.

Had Pedersen made the penalty, it would have been a completely different game and Rovers probably would have gotten three points, but hindsight is 20/20.

13. Aston Villa (7)

Villa make the biggest drop in the rankings after making a complete 180 in their form.

After a dominant performance at home against West Ham, they flopped at St. James' Park. The absence of James Milner is already being felt, and Marc Albrighton and others have to step into his place quick.

12. Newcastle United (18)

The big mover up in the rankings this week belongs to Chris Hughton's men who destroyed Aston Villa on Sunday in their home opener at St. James' Park.

The best news of all (or worst depending on who you ask) is that Joey Barton has shaved off his moustache after the win, and the concentration on him can change to his skills, which he showed in Newcastle's first goal.

11. Everton (11)

The Toffees were almost a victim of a non-call on a penalty, but Tim Cahill was able to put in a rebound off a free kick to give David Moyes' club a 1-0 lead over Wolves.

Unfortuneately, that 1-0 lead did not hold thanks to a Ebanks-Blake goal in the second half that left Everton with a draw.

10. Sunderland (9)

Sunderland are still looking to replace Kenwyne Jones, who departed for Stoke right before the season, and need to quick after being shut out by West Brom 1-0 on Saturday.

9. Bolton Wanderers (12)

Johan Elmander came alive for Owen Coyle's club scoring two of Bolton's three goals against West Ham, the other goal came from Matthew Upson's own goal.

If Elmander scores all season like he did Saturday, Bolton could finish in the top half of the table.

American fans watch out for Stuart Holden, who is getting solid playing time for Bolton.

8. Liverpool (6)

Let's be honest: Liverpool did not look good Monday night at the City of Manchester Stadium and need to find some chemistry up front to help out Fernando Torres.

Torres has not gotten back to his 2008-2009 season form and Milan Jovanovic made no real impact on the wing.

With Javier Mascherano finally on his way out, Roy Hodgson is looking to sign PSV duo Carlos Saicedo and Ola Toivonen before the transfer window closes to provide help to his struggling side.

7. Birmingham (8)

There is one thing Alex McLeish's club has shown in two weeks and that is that they can score.

This week, Craig Gardner scored two goals against Bolton after the team was rejuvenated by Ben Foster's big penalty save of Morten Gamst Pedersen early in the second half.

6. Fulham (10)

Fulham continued their streak of playing Manchester United tough at Craven Cottage and again did it in dramatic fashion.

Brede Hangeland suffered utter disappointment scoring an own goal and after a save by David Stockdale of Nani on a penalty kick, Hangeland was able to score late and give the Cottagers a 2-2 draw with United.

5. Tottenham Hotspur (3)

Spurs should have drawn with Stoke but did not because of a bad call gone their way.

Gareth Bale did put in two goals and became an early candidate for goal of the year with second goal.

Bale is the real deal and could one of the big revelations in the EPL this season.

4. Manchester City (5)

In front their owner, Sheikh Mansour, City pulled off a dominant 3-0 over Liverpool.

James Milner had a good debut and Adam Johnson starred as he fights for a first team spot. Joe Hart proved again why he should be England's number one and Carlos Tevez got on the scoreboard with two goals in the second half.

3. Manchester United (2)

United should have beaten Fulham but fell victim to the Cottage Curse yet again.

Paul Scholes score early and the Red Devils should have put the game away when Nani stepped up to the spot for a penalty kick, but it was denied by David Stockdale and Fulham crawled back thanks to Hangeland.

Good thing that Wigan comes to Old Trafford next week so United's scorers, especially Wayne Rooney can get on track.

2. Arsenal (4)

The Gunners were dominant over Blackpool at the Emirates and Theo Walcott was the ringleader.

Walcott had a hat trick and goals from Abou Diaby, Andrei Arshavin and Marouane Chamakh's first Arsenal goal added to the 6-0 final.

1. Chelsea (1)

Carlo Ancelotti's men look in midseason form with another 6-0 thrashing, this time Wigan were the victims.

Didier Drogba did not score but helped set up a couple goals.

Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou both scored twice as Flourent Malouda added to his early season total to three with a goal and Yossi Benayoun scored his first for Chelsea.
