The Sweden striker, brought in on loan from Barcelona in a deal which will become permanent next summer, saw his 87th-minute spot-kick hit the post and bounce away to safety.

A goal at that stage would have set up a tense finish for Cesena who led through first-half efforts from Erjon Bogdani and Emanuele Giaccherni.

Milan's Alexandre Pato also had two goals disallowed on a frustrating night for the Rossoneri.

Roma, who finished second in Serie A last season, fared even worse after being thrashed 5-1 at Cagliari.

Daniele Conti was instrumental for the home side although the goal scoring midfielder was in hospital when the final whistle sounded.

Conti put the Sardinians in front in the eighth minute before Daniele De Rossi brought Roma level 10 minutes later.

Conti was then hacked down inside the penalty area by Nicolas Burdisso, who saw red, with the felled player carried off on a stretcher.

Alessandro Matri put Cagliari back in front and Robert Acquafresca doubled their advantage in the 38th minute.

Matri's second of the game in the 47th minute made it four before Andrea Lazzarri completed the rout with three minutes remaining.

Defending champions Inter Milan picked up their first win after edging past Udinese 2-1 at the San Siro.

Lucio put Inter ahead after six minutes, but Antonio Floro Flores deservedly levelled after 31.

Samuel Eto'o scored the winner in the 67th minute, reacting first to fire home after his penalty had been saved.
