Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has revived the debate around the proposed Premier League ‘39th game’ by suggesting he would like to see competitive games played overseas.

When the idea of adding an extra game to the Premier League season, to be played in cities across the globe, was first put forward in February 2008 opposition from fans groups, clubs and Fifa, the game’s world governing body, saw it quickly shelved.

However, Werner, part of Liverpool’s new ownership set up, believes the general principle is still one worth exploring.

“Pre-season matches are great but why not have an actual match in season,” Werner said.

“I think first of all the Premier League is the strongest league in the world and its reach is global.

“It’s been very impressive to me, the number of people globally who watch and we hope to expand that imprint.

“I think the more important the game the more excitement.”

Werner succeeded former chairman Martin Broughton, whose tenure at Anfield came to an end when he successfully oversaw the sale of the club to John Henry’s New England Sports Ventures in a £300m deal last month.
