Man City winning race for Benfica star; Milan chasing River Plate youngster

Man City winning race for Benfica star

Benfica defender David Luiz is reportedly keen on joining Manchester City despite interest from Chelsea, Inter and Milan, according to reports from Portugal.

Luiz has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe even though his contract doesn’t expire before 2015, and he seems to have made his mind about the future destination.

Manchester City already had a €32 million bid rejected last summer but they are ready to make a new offer in the light of new developments.

The 23-year-old Luiz became a key player for Benfica immediately upon his arrival from Vitoria and he has since also amassed 4 appearances for Brazil national team.

Luiz is regarded as one of the most complete centre-backs in football today and he would definitely be a great addition to City’s shaky back line.

Milan chasing River Plate youngster

AC Milan have expressed interest in River Plate midfielder Erik Lamela with the Rossoneri ready to offer €12 million for the 18-year-old.

Milan sporting director Alfredo Breida watched Lamela score his first goal for the Millionaires in the 2:1 victory over Colon, and he remained in Buenos Aires to open talks with River management.

The player himself believes it is still too early for him to leave Monumental.

“Obviously, it is very good that Milan sporting director have come to watch the match,” said Lamela.

“But, I have been at River all my life, I am here and I will not leave. Maybe in a couple of years after winning something with this team.”

Nonetheless, River president Daniel Passarella have informed Breida that Lamela would be available for €20 million, although it is highly unlikely Milan will pay so much for yet unproven player.

Van Bommel set to leave Bayern

Mark van Bommel is nearing Bayern exit with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Dutch midfielder will be out of contract in the summer and since it is highly unlikely he’ll be offered a new deal at Alianz Arena, he is expected to leave Munchen in January.

“I’ll first talk with Bayern. If we can’t agree, only then will I look elsewhere.

“There is interest from the Middle East and the US, but I don’t see myself doing that. I want to carry on playing at a high level till Euro 2012 because I believe (Holland) can win with the group of players we have.”

Tottenham and Manchester City have also shown interest in the Holland international and the two clubs could send scouts to watch Van Bommel in Munchen as Bayern prepare for the Champions League game against Basel.
