However it seems that after just six months in charge at the San Siro, Benitez's future is looking anything but secure.

In the eyes of the Italian media, five defeats in their last nine games while conceding 16 goals and sitting 10 points off AC Milan at the top of the Serie A table is inexcusable for a club who last season completed the treble.

Last night's scoreline marked Inter's second heaviest defeat in the group stages of this season's Champions League after Gareth Bale punished them in Tottenham's 3-1 victory at the beginning of last month.

Nonetheless, Benitez dismissed the result as unimportant insisting instead that at this stage qualification is all that matters - albeit in second place behind Tottenham leaving Inter in the bottom eight seeds for next Friday's final 16 draw.

"We did not play a good game, but this was a match with the team already qualified," Benitez said. "The important match was the one against FC Twente [where victory assured Inter of a place in the final 16].

"Tonight we tried some young players and we have not risked the injured. We had no new injuries and that's a good thing.

"Now we must focus on the Club World Cup - Milito and Maicon are close to returning and you will see, time changes everything. That's the goal, I'm changing everything, changing the mentality."

When asked he if felt his position at Inter is now all dependant on what happens at the tournament in the UAE, where the Italian side will enter in the semi-finals stage, Benitez said: "My future? It certainly does not depend on the result in Abu Dhabi."

Argentina international Esteban Cambiasso shared Benitez's nonchalant attitude and reminded reporters that Inter won the Champions League last season after qualifying second in their group.

"We know what our situation, we are qualified and we are now geared to achieving what lies ahead, which is the World Club. Analysing tonight's result too much makes no sense.

"Now we have to improve as a team; we must allow the injured to recover and focus on the World. We'll then look at the league and will return in February to focus on the Champions League.

"Certainly I do not like losing, but I prefer to go out defeated the last match and qualified. Even last year we qualified second and we know how it ended, although I do not like to lose this defeat is not a drama."

Inter's lowest month:

November 2: lose 3-1 to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

November 14: lose first Milan derby of the season 1-0.

November 21: suffer humiliating 2-1 defeat to Chievo leavig them without a win in five games, 6th in the Serie A table and nine points behind leaders AC Milan.

December 3: lose 3-1 to Lazio leaving them fifth in the domestic league but now 10 points behind leaders AC Milan.

December 7: surprise 3-0 loss to Werder Bremen means Inter qualify for the Champions League knock-out stage second behind Tottenham.
