World Cup winner Xavi Hernandez yesterday insisted his Spain team was completely drug free.

The country’s media dragged them into a doping scandal after world champion runer Marta Dominguez, 36, was arrested with 13 others last week.

But Spain and Barcelona midfielder Xavi, 30, said: “From within football we can say there is no doping. We pass tests all the time, and in this sense we are very calm.

“We won the European championships and World Cup without doping.”

Dominguez’s physician, Dr Eufamio Fuentes, dubbed Doctor Doping, was among those arrested in raids, which turned up hormones, steroids and bags of blood at 15 addresses around Spain.

Newspaper El Mundo quotes him as telling other detainees in a Madrid cell: “If I talk, Spain would be stripped of the 2008 Euro championship and 2010 World Cup.”
