Ancelotti: 'I think the moment is gone – finally'

The Chelsea manager, Carlo Ancelotti, is confident his side's wobble is now over after two wins in six days gave them an outside chance of retaining their Premier League title.

Monday's 3-1 victory at Blackpool was achieved without the Blues hitting anywhere near top form. But, unlike in the previous two months when they lost against Wolves and drew against Everton and Fulham, they never really looked like losing to the Seasiders.

Two goals from Frank Lampard and one from John Terry ensured there were no slip-ups at Bloomfield Road, allowing the club to move within nine points of the league leaders Manchester United with a match in hand.

The two league wins came on the back of a Champions League victory over Copenhagen and Ancelotti now thinks his side have overcome their mid-season blip. "I think so. Now we have three games where we have played very well, taking good results," he said. "I think the moment is gone – finally."

Despite the failure of Fernando Torres to score in his fifth match for the Stamford Bridge side since his £50m transfer from Liverpool and Didier Drogba's lack of a threat, Ancelotti was unconcerned. He took positives from the fact it was Chelsea's old guard of Lampard and Terry who produced the goods when it was needed.

The Italian said: "Terry's and Lampard's performances were very good, not just because they scored. In general the players gave good support to the team and this is important."

The substitute Salomon Kalou replaced the injured Drogba just 10 minutes after half-time and had a decisive influence on the game, winning the penalty for Lampard's first goal and playing in the England midfielder for his second. "Kalou made a fantastic impact, he moved very well and that was very important for us."

While Chelsea are now looking up at the top of the table, Blackpool are nervously eyeing proceedings over their shoulder as, with just one win in nine games, they are only two points above the relegation zone.

However, the manager Ian Holloway is upbeat about their chances of survival and even though they lost against Chelsea he was able to take positives from that game, which he believes will stand them in good stead for the remainder of the campaign.

Holloway said: "In games like that, when David is swinging his sling at Goliath you need to hit him straight in the forehead. But we had a go, we didn't stop swinging and that is what pleased me more than anything.

"Unfortunately we will put our sling in the bag, buy another back of rocks and look forward to our next challenge, which is Blackburn Rovers. We kept going and defensively I think we looked a lot sounder than we have done.

"It worked because they can tear you limb from limb if you give them space in midfield. We tied up Drogba and then on came Kalou.

"It was a bit disappointing not to take something from the game because a few weeks ago we were rocking and rolling. Now at this level we are not, that is just the way it is."
