Manchester United dodge FA action after coach damages Wembley wall after Cup defeat to Manchester City

Manchester United have escaped punishment from the Football Association after one of their coaches damaged a  dressing-room wall following their weekend FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wembley.

As Sportmail revealed, Sir Alex Ferguson has been cleared of any blame after it emerged fitness coach Tony Strudwick caused the damage when he kicked out in anger as United's players came off after the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

United and City are also expected to escape punishment over the fracas sparked by Mario Balotelli's celebrations at the final whistle as Roberto Mancini's side clinched a famous victory.

Although the damage was repaired overnight, it was visible when Stoke arrived for the second semi-final of the weekend against Bolton on Sunday.

A United spokesman said: 'We brought it to their attention on Saturday night, we apologised and offered to pay. It was about three inches in diameter and was only surface damage and not a hole.'

Strudwick, who was involved in the furious bust-up between United players and Chelsea groundstaff at Stamford Bridge in 2008, wore a headset at Wembley so he could relay the manager's instructions from the stands to his assistant Mike Phelan.

Ferguson is serving a five-match touchline ban imposed for comments he made about referee Martin Atkinson and has accused the FA of victimising his club after striker Wayne Rooney missed Saturday's big game as a result of a two-match ban for swearing into a television camera.

The latest incident will do little to improve relations between United and English football's ruling body.

It is unlikely the FA will take any action over the ugly scenes at the end of Saturday's game when Balotelli appeared to taunt United fans, prompting an angry reaction from Rio Ferdinand and Anderson and a melee among players and staff.

Balotelli was accused of being disrespectful and of allegedly making comments about Anderson's girlfriend. The FA are waiting to receive additional footage from ITV on Tuesday so they can view the incident from other angles but are unlikely to pursue it further.

Because the Italian was some distance from the United fans, it is felt his actions bore no comparison to those of Emmanuel Adebayor, who was charged with improper conduct for running to celebrate a City goal in front of Arsenal fans in 2009.
