England expected to reject any Argentina offer to play at Wembley to mark FA's 150th anniversary

England are likely to snub any approach from Argentina to play a Wembley friendly to celebrate the Football Association’s 150th anniversary in 2013, preferring to focus on fixtures against Scotland and Brazil or even a South American tour.

FA sources have confirmed it is “highly unlikely” that Argentina will be invited to take part in the celebrations despite exploratory talks with the South American nation having taken place during the 2018 World Cup bid.

Last November, the fixture agent for the Argentine Football Association announced that an agreement had been reached for a Wembley game in 2013, but the FA has never confirmed the arrangement.

Last week’s attack on England by the AFA president, Julio Grondona, who told the FA “to leave the Fifa family alone”, has not helped relations between the countries. However, FA sources insist their stance is not motivated by events in Zurich.

The FA says that no final decision on fixtures for the 150th anniversary will be taken until after the World Cup qualifying draw later this summer.

It will seek to balance the football requirements thrown up by the draw with a desire to mark the anniversary, and the need to generate revenue from Wembley.

There is significant support for a game against Scotland, re-creating the oldest international fixture, and consideration has been given to games against Brazil and Germany.

One possibility that has been discussed is a tournament format under which England would play Brazil and Scotland.

It appears unlikely that the other home nations, Wales and Northern Ireland, will feature in any Wembley showpiece. There would be limited footballing reasons to play all the home nations and they would not be guaranteed to sell out Wembley.

The FA will also consider the possibility of taking England to Brazil in the summer of 2013, which would provide valuable experience ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

It has also not discounted the possibility that it might be involved in the 2013 Confederations Cup, effectively the test event for the World Cup, which England would qualify for if they won next summer’s European Championship.

England have not played in South America since 1984, when they undertook a three-match tour involving matches against Brazil, Uruguay and Chile.
