Manchester City's thoughts may turn to Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero after Carlos Tévez issues transfer request

Juventus are currently in pole position to sign the Argentina international and the only club to have lodged a firm offer, after City cooled on the 23 year-old. This was on the understanding that Tévez had decided to stay at Eastlands.

However, following last night's statement from Tévez revealing his determination to leave City, the Premier League's big spenders may rejoin the race for Aguero with the sale of Tévez, who earns £230,000-a-week in wages and is valued at around £50 million, effectively funding the forward's replacement.

Atletico are resigned to losing Aguero this summer after the Argentine publicly stated his intention to leave back in May. It has been reported that Aguero, who is Diego Maradona's son-in-law and the father of the World Cup winner's grandson, would prefer a move to Real, but Atletico will not countenance selling a prized asset to their city rivals.

Aguero has a £41m release clause in his Atletico contract.

"I am aware of Juve's offer but only when the Copa America is over, will my future destination be known," Aguero said from his national team's training base.

"There are negotiations going on with the Italian club but I don't know how many millions they have offered for my services.

"These are things that only my agents know.

"My only focus right now is on the Copa America."

City have received no formal offers for Tévez, but Inter Milan and AC Milan are understood to be considering a move for a player who still has three years remaining on his contract at Eastlands.

Boca Juniors is Tévez’s ideal destination, but the £50m valuation will be prohibitive.

Despite the obvious financial barrier that Tévez and his advisers must overcome in order to secure a move away from City, the player insisted in his statement that the "incredibly challenging" situation of being away from his children has forced him to seek a move.

Tévez said: "It is with great regret that I have to inform Manchester City of my wish to leave the club.

"I would like to state that I have great respect for the club, its supporters and the owner, Sheikh Mansour, who has been nothing other than respectful to me.

"I hope that the people understand the difficult circumstances I have been living under the past 12 months, in regards to my family.

"Living without my children in Manchester has been incredibly challenging for me.

"Everything I do, I do for my daughters, Katie and Florencia. I need to be closer to them and to spend more time with them.

"I need them to be happy because my life is about them now. I need to be in a place where they can adapt."

Meanwhile, City are aiming to complete the signing of Partizan Belgrade defender Stefan Savic before Roberto Mancini’s squad fly to Los Angeles to step up pre-season preparations on Friday.

After completing the £7m purchase of Gael Clichy from Arsenal, attentions are now set to striking an agreement with Partizan for Montenegro international Savic following City’s £6m bid for the 20 year-old.

Partizan are holding out for £9m for the centre half due to a sell-on clause entitling Savic’s former club, BSK Borca, to half of any transfer fee.
